The standard advice in the trade is correct: start with the Japan Pearl Exporters' Association member list (japan-pearl.com). JPEA is the industry body in Kobe that sets export standards and runs the Japan Pearl Fair; membership means a company operates under those standards. Amit Trading (Pearls.jp) has been a member since 1971. Then ask any supplier, including us, for three things: grading on the specific lot, provenance (farm region and auction source), and, for top-grade akoya, the option of independent Hanadama certification from the Pearl Science Laboratory (or other comparable labs). A wholesaler who hesitates on any of the three is telling you something. Japan's pearl trade is small, and reputations are earned over decades.
Amit Trading was founded in Tokyo in 1969 by Zvi Chitayat, after learning the trade in Japan's major pearl hubs in Ise and Kobe. We have been a member of the Japan Pearl Exporters' Association since 1971, and today the company is run by the second generation, Dori Chitayat. For over five decades we have exported Japanese akoya, Tahitian and South Sea pearls to wholesalers, brands, jewelers, designers and resellers in more than 40 countries, buying at Japanese auctions and directly from farms in Mie, Ehime and Nagasaki, as well as other saltwater pearl farms around the world.
We grade to the standards Japanese export houses have used for decades, the same 5S criteria explained in our pearl quality guide, and can arrange independent Hanadama certification (Pearl Science Laboratory, Tokyo) on premium akoya.
